If this hobby was easier, would it be less interesting?

Well I think that goes with everything. Some people like the challenge and find that aspect interesting in itself. While others like no challenge and want a pretty tank. I would like no challege and a pretty tank. I enjoy the beauty natural aspect of it all.

I think either way people gain satisfaction by making a creation and also just by having the creation.

Great question.
Sometimes i wish it was a bit easier - cause then it'd probably be a bit cheaper too. Some of the trial and error involved really burns a hole in ones pocket. :)

I really think that it's only as difficult as one chooses to make it. (To a degree, of course...a non-planted low-light lightly stocked community tank still needs a minimal amount of maintenance.)

Edit- I just realized that this was posted in the Planted Tank subforum, so add a little tuft of java moss to that 'example' tank that I mentioned above. ;)

If it were easier, it would be less interesting intellectually, but there would be more time to enjoy the emotional and aesthetic part of the hobby (the beauty of the tank/the fish etc). I don't really like playing scientist and I HATE playing doctor to my fish. But still I do love the challenge--whenever I come close to finishing a tank, I usually rip it up and start a newer, bigger one. I think for me it's mainly a creative thing...

My FO tanks are boring. I have a difficult time bringing myself to do the weekly maintenance on them. They are established and cycled. Been up for a year. Ho-Hum. ZzZzZzZz

That's why I'm setting up a heavily planted 75 gallon with all the things needed for achieving really good growth. Should be a hoot trying to keep the plants going and not the algae.

I agree with Ras. I like the challenge aspect, but since I don't have the money to go the high-tech route just yet my planted tanks are simple and easy to maintain.

I'm not much of an aquatic gardener, but my tanks look nice and my fish are happy. I love planted tanks and would never use fake plants, but the fish interest me the most. I would like to develop my gardening skills more though, and plan to try higher maintenance setups in the future.
