My girldfriend was looking to setup a small tank with a few fish in it. Her apartment gets really hot in the summer so we were trying to find fish that don't mind a little heat during the day. The LOF said goldfish. I just smiled and agreed though from what I have read they like it a bit cool. Any suggestions on a nice hardy fish?

Thanks

Goldfish are a coldwater fish, although the less fancy varieties are able to stand more temp fluctuations.

Keep in mind that it's not just temp we're talking about here but dissolved oxygen levels as well. The higher the temp, the less oxygen dissolves in the water.

If you must have a goldfish, try a Comet. Those are pretty and hardy too.

If I were you, I'd get guppies. I keep my guppies at about 83 degrees and they are happy as a clam, in fact I think their colors come out more at these higher temperatures.

In any case, if it's normally hot in there, try to keep the tank/bowl near the floor. It can be significantly cooler down there.

I'd perhaps try fish from the Labyrinth family (Anabantids) as I recall they are found in many tropical regions. If dissolved oxygen becomes an issue then these fish are able to breathe atmospheric air which they gulp from the surface. There are many to choose from (smaller to medium gouramis, Fighting fish, paradise) but I'd still try to find the coolest position in the apartment as Heady suggested.
