My Mono Sebaes have just spawned! I was in middle feeding my sebaes tonight, and I noticed that two of them were swimming in a tight circle chasing each other, and as they were doing this I saw a white cloud form around them. They stopped swimming in this fashion and this white cloud dispersed, at that moment I realized that they were eggs and that a spawning just occured. All the sebaes and the puffer started eating the eggs almost immediately, and it appeared that most of them were eaten. I was somewhat shocked that my monos spawned since apparently this is fairly rare in captivity. I had no intention on breeding them, heck I didn't even realize that one was pregnant! Now I am wondering if any of the eggs will hatch and if they do if any fry will survive. It will sure be interesting to see what happens.
Quite rare in captivity, GFF, Congratulations!!! Nice job of keeping the fish obviously.
I have no info on rearing them - but I'd bet on rotifers and such ilk.
Very impressive, very nice work - record those parameters.
Congrads!!!
What were the conditions you had them in?

Are these the ones were you offering for a new home?
You'll probably waant to keep them now since your monos are breeding.(?)

Thanks for congrats RTR and Olaf, and thanks for the compliment RTR. I keep a journal on what I do with my tanks and fish. I record anything which I consider significant. The conditions of my tank my tank were as follows:
Specific gravity= 1.014
Temperature=80.8 degrees
Food: I have been feeding them Wardley's "Turtle Delite" dried whole shrimp and "Pro Gold" pellet goldfish food, for the last week and a half to two weeks. The shrimp was fed twice or sometimes three times a day and the pellet food once per day.
Lighting: a single strip light with reflector using a 30 watt GE Aqua Rays bulb.
I had the specific gravity of the water at 1.012 for approximately two months before I started to slowly raise it to it's current level.
My water was at 1.0145 before I did a 55% water change three days ago. The specific gravity of the new water was at 1.0135.
Olaf, Yes these are the monos I am offer to a new home, and I still want to give tham away. The fact that they have spawned does not change fact that I do not have the room to raise them properly. They are too crowded in the 40 gallon tank, and they will only get bigger.
Olaf, are you planning on taking them soon? I can't bear to see them this crowded for much longer. They are nipping and chasing each other something terrible. Please let me know.

Thanks Huy, Ya it is a shame I wish that I could keep them but I just don't have the room. Besides raising fry would be a full time job, they always wanna eat :). Huy, you wanna keep them in Canada? Get yourself a nice large tank and I will give them to ya ;).

How exciting! I always feel such a rush, when my fish are rewarding me with spawning. That's the real proof that we are doing something right!

Wow, that's awesome!
Congratulations, you must take excellent care of your fish ;)
Yes, I am still interested. I did fill out the paper work to the best of my ability with the information I know about.
I still haven't an answer from that phone number you left on here.

Hmm... I don't know why you cannot get through to that number, I just checked to make sure that is was right and it is. This is the number I called to talk to the inspector in Detroit. You should call customs and ask them for the number to the fish and wildlife department, maybe the number has changed. Also have you gotten your car fixed? Will you be able to come and pick up the monos yourself?
My car will be done soon... had to get PARTS. ($$)
I usual get a recording but today it just rang.

So then you would be able to drive done yourself and pick them up?
I talked to Inspector Brown today.
She said if this is the only fish I'm going to be importing into the US that she would let it slide and that I would not have to get a Game and Wildlife License.
WOO HOO!
I would just have to fill out the paper work.
Got hit with snow last night and today.
I hope it all melts soon (by friday). My car has high proformance summer tires. I don't want to change them now that spring is almost here.

Olaf, that is great news! So are saying that you will be able to come and pick up the monos as soon as the snow melts?
Pretty much!
(Hey snow, go away! Summer is coming)

My Mono Sebaes have spawned again. This time I did not actually witness the act but I did see all this fish eating the barely visible eggs. I had to look closely to make sure that it actually was eggs that they were eating. I have not seen any Sebae fry from the last spawn so I am guessing that either all the eggs were eaten, the eggs did not hatch, the tiny fry were eaten, or all of the above.

They have spawned again tonight. I wish that I had the space and time to try hatch the eggs and raise some fry:( Oh well maybe in the future.
Hey what is that syndrome that is happening in Toronto and Quebec?
Starts with Z
Sars is what it is called.

guess you won't be going to toronto any time soon eh? j/k it's contained so theres no real risk of infection.
Yes.
From what they know so far. I was talking with my dad last night about it, he is a doctor.
I also talked to the US inspectors they said that if I stop there and pick up the fish that I might not be able to bring them back with me and that I might be put in quarantine.
They said for the safety of you and your family, it would be a good idea not to stop anywhere in Canada, on your way home.
Back in Michigan there is no news about this, at least nothing I have heard listening to the news, all on the war.
This really sux, cuz I would really like to pick up those fish!

****! ****! ****! and another ****!!!!!! I have been waiting this long for Olaf to pick up my monos and now he won't do it because of this F***ing S.A.R.S. I honestly think that the U.S inspectors are overeacting, S.A.R.S is minor threat here in Toronto. If you were going to Hong Kong or that province in China, then that would be a different story. AAARRRRGGGGH! I hope the threat will be over soon, Then maybe you can pick them up then. Or maybe I can find someone else to take them.

I'd take em but I'm on the other side of the country =)
Hey the LFS owner's brother is coming to Michigan.
I called him and gave him the info how to get a hold of you to arrange a pick up time.
Just want you to know that the sebae's are all doing great. No more nipping. They have adapted the behavior of my other monos.
Thanks again.

I am very glad to hear that the Seabes are doing well and that they have quit niping at each other. Have the tail fins on them healed up yet?
You are welcome. I am just glad that that they found a good home :) .
Yes the tail fins healed about a little more than week after recieving them. Now they have a black outline on the edge of the tail fin.
My original sebae does chase the Argentus Monos as much, actually very little now. He schools with the other Sebaes and once in a while the two different schools of monos will school together.
My tank at this time seems very balanced. There wasn't conflict before, but now it seems that all the fish flow together better.
