i'm going to set up a 90 gallon tank with the following equipment. emperor biowheel 400, either a eheim or magnum canister filter, a coralife super skimmer, 2 maxi jet 1200's , one seio super flow pump (don't know size yet, any suggestions?) a 250w stealth heater, 100 lbs fugi live rock from drsfostersmith.com for substrate i have 50lbs of pool filter sand, 30 lbs of aragonite sand and 20 lbs of aragalive sand. for lighting i'm trying to go with a 48" tek light with 8/54watt bulbs (t5-ho), but i've read alot about having to go with a sump, which i don't want to do, my tank isn't drilled and i don't think i want to mess with it. i'm very good at doing water changes and have no problem doing them often.

ok here's my question,so would i be able to make a reef tank work and thrive without a sump, only the equipment i have????

It's definitely possible to have a reef tank without a sump. In fact, many people recommend going without a sump and using the natural method. In my 60 gallon reef tank my equipment is 2 maxijet 900, 2 maxijet 1200, a remora pro skimmer and that's it. I have about 90lbs of fiji rock and an inch of live sand. I do regular water changes of 10% every week and my reef tank is doing awesome. Do some reading up on how to go without a sump, that should help.

Totally possible. I have a 65g FOWLR (there are some corals, but it's going to be ages before I can call it a reef) with an XP2 canister filter, 2 MJ1200 powerheads, 2 MJ900 powerheads, 300W of PC lighting and a Prizm (soon to be a Remora Pro) skimmer. No sump, no fuge, and it's doing great.

The only thing I'd add to your setup is a skimmer, IMO it's easier to skim than to do huge, frequent water changes on a big tank to keep water quality up.

i've got a skimmer, a coralife super skimmer. thanks for the replys so quick

You dont really need the biowheel or the canister with that much liverock / sand maybee spend the money you saved on a little more atractive live rock!

Can I do a FOWLR without a sump? I have a wet/dry filter but I would like to remove the bioballs and run it empty? Any comments?

Yes, things like snails starfish and hermit cranbs will keep it nice and clean

My favourites are nasuarus (sp) snails, and serpent stars

i should update my sig really my clearnup crew are

4 Turbo snails
14 Nasuarus snails
20 Cerinth Snails
14 Red Leg Hermits
1 Serpent Starfish

The problem is that I have a snowflake eel and a niger trigger. They will eat the invert.
