Bacteria Question

I got a new filter for my little 2.5-gallon betta tank. I needed to clean the tank so I figured I would get a better filter for the thing. The gravel and plants are the same. How long do I need to leave the old filter on the tank before the bacteria gets a good colony going in the new filter?

A tank that small I'd just move the media over. Any water changes needed to counter a mini cycle wouldn't be that hard. I would rather change out 1 gallon of water daily to control a mini cycle than the 65 gallons I was doing in my 2 tanks.

I'd leave it for a week, myself. I've found that running a new filter on the same tank as an established one is pretty quick cycling.

When you remove the old one, either put it in another tank or a bowl or something and keep it running until you are sure the new one is established.

My plan is to put the old filter on a little 1.5-gallon for my platy fry. I just ordered a little heater for it and it will take over a week to get here. I’ll move the filter when the heater shows up. If anyone is near northern Delaware and wants some free platys, let me know. Thanks for all the input.

Another quick question. I have 4 endlers in my bow-front. The 2 males are harassing the females like crazy. Can I put the 2 males in the 2.5-gallon with the betta or should I just put the 2 females in the 10-gallon breeding tank?

Its only a 2.5 gallon tank he is talking about.

What are the filters you have?

2 filters might be to much on a 2.5 gallon tank. I'm all for overkill but I don't think the Betta in a 2.5 can take the flow of 200 gph.

I’m not sure what the original filter is. It’s a HOB that came with my 1.5-gallon tank. I remember that it was rated for up to 5 gallons. The new filter is a small corner filter that filters 45 gallons per hour. I want to get the 1.5-gallon up and running again so I can give my baby fish a nice place to stay before I give them away. The 2.5-gallon has both filters on it now with the betta swimming around the Amazon sword and Western Milfoil plants. I lost all the snails when I cleaned the tank, so I pulled a couple out of my bow-front tank. The 2.5-gallon also has a 25watt heater in it.

FYI, my wife wants me to leave the male endlers in the bow-front tank, so the females are moving to the breeding tank.
