I thought that I read somewhere that there was a top and bottom of live rock. When I picked some up today at the LFS the girl put it in the bag and I did not pay attention to which side was up. I got home and took a look at it and found half to be smooth and half to be rough. I am wasting my time or is there something i need to be looking for.

If there is coralline, coral, or other growth, then that side goes up. Otherwise, I don't imagine it makes a lot of difference.
The bottom can handle the weight. Eggcrate will just trap debris and make your life difficult down the road.charlie said:
