Wow! These guys can really break glass? I wonder how small a mantis it takes to break something important.

Yeah, they can break glass. They are awesome creatures, one day I'd like to set up a tank with a peacock mantis shrimp, they are absolutley beautiful.

This is from R.L. Shimek's book "Marine Invertebrates":

"The other lineage kills its prey by striking a forceful blow with the claws. The force of the strike is generally sufficient to kill the prey outright, and in some large striking mantis shrimp, it is roughly the equivalent to the force of a .22 caliber bullet as it exits the muzzle of a gun."

Pretty impressive stuff.

They also have the most advanced eye configuration in the animal kingdom, they have tri-nocular vision (humans have bi-nocular vision), and also are rather intelligent, its why if a trap fails to work once that same type of trap will never work again.

I have one in my reef tank, it is a smasher though so none of my fish have died, it is really hard to catch, and i have tried all sorts of things traps, bottles, bait none worked, but they do hide quite alot and normally only come out at night, the one i have is black.

i saw a show about them once... so even if i do stay in the freshwater area dont be surprised to se me here everyonce in a while!....

they evidently are territorial and can be agitated by their reflection! this can make them attack their reflection, and ultamately the glass! (i guess if you wanted to se if yours could break glass, youd just have to setup a small mirror in the tank!)

another cool invertebrate is the pistol shrimp, it uses its claw to make a compressed section of water that 'shoots' from its claw, stuning anything that is too close... it makes a clicking sound that for a long time was thought to be the reason why the fish got stunned (loud sounds) but later someone found out about the supercompressed water thingie... it would be like a very small charge of dynomite (which blows stuff up through decompression, causing air around it to compress rapidly- same as thunder)
