I am expecting my platy to have babies any day now, so I put her in the little breeding cage that was already home to four 2 week old platies. I stepped out for a couple of hours, and when I came back only one platy was left and the soon-to-be-mom platy was just sitting at the top acting very sluggish and weak. Did she over-eat herself? Is this the way they act before they give birth? Could it be that she wasnt very active because there isnt much room for her to swim around? I took her out to let her swim freely but it didnt change much. I really hope She'll make it. Any advice or answers would be awesome!

Also, I got 3 kuhli loaches tongiht. What i really cool fish!! I have trouble finding them though...... oh well

is the tank properly cycled? Maybe a possible infection that is preventing her from giving birth. Any symptoms of a large belly, possibly her scales standing out...?

Weren't the two-week old platies in the cage exactly to protect them from full-grown fish?

the tank has ben cycled for a month or two now

Yes, the babies were in there to protect them from bigger fish, but it was one of those ones that have the grill seperating the cage into two parts. The grill lets the babies swim where they want, but it also lets them hide from the adult...which is what I thought they were going to do. Apparently they didnt. I was under the impression that they would try and stay away from the adult.

It looked like the platy had a large belly, thats why I put her in the maternity ward.

anyway, life goes on and we learn from our mistakes:)
