i was originally planning on stocking my 20g tank with my one male honey gourami and 2 females. i found a place that can order females for me. my male honey does not seem like he would be agressive at all. he runs and hides if he sees too much movement around the tank, he chases the tetras a few inches if they get too close, but has never caused them any harm. even the new otos he hasn't even looked twice at. however, i know that has no bearing on how he will act with others of his own species.

i've heard some conflicting viewpoints on this. some say they should never be kept together and the male will kill the girls. others say that if you have two or more females, it will spread out the males agression and they should be alright. i have also heard that honey dwarf gouramis tend to be more mellow than even the standard dwarf gouramis (flame, blue neon, powder blue, etc.) but i really dont want to spend $6 for a fish just to have it die (well, i wouldn't want to spend even $1 on a fish just to have it die)

so what should i do?

I've kept gouramies since I started the hobby. Actually, my fisrt pair of gouramies were feeder fish for my stingray. One became lunch and the other survives till today.

However, I got hooked to them. I have 8 right now: 2 three-spotted, 2 blue, 2 pearl and 2 paradise fish. 1 male per female except the paradise (2 males).

Their bahavior is normal. Sometimes if a male wakes up cranky, he will chase eveyone in the tank but the next day everything is back to normal.

The only strange thing I've noticed is how both (male) paradise fish keep mating each other.... ...
