I bought a fish under the name of Psuedotropheus lelupi at my lfs a while ago. My tank is a malawain mbuna tank. when i did a search for it on the internet all i could find was a different lelupi from lake taganyika. was the fish store name wrong or is there a fish named pseudotropheus lelupi?

I've been keeping mbunas for awhile and never heard of a psuedotropheus leleupi. Probably mislabled.

If it is a cylindrical yellow fish it is a Neolamprologus leleupi probably. It is a Tanganyikan fish not a Malawi.

it is not yellow or cyndrilical. All i could find was a lamprologus leleupi. it was from lake tanganyika and it was the only type of leleupi i could find. It looks like my mbuna tank has got a tanganyikan cichlid in it. O well. Thanks for the help:)

What does this fish look like because Neolamprologus leluepi from Lake Tanganyika are yellow and cylindrical. This is what N. leluepi look like http://www.tanganyikan-cichlids.co.uk/Articles/Lelupiss.htm.
There are different varieties but all are pretty similar, click on the more pictures in the lower right hand corner to see if yours may be a variety.

Putting a period after website names causes that problem. Try it with the link here: http://www.tanganyikan-cichlids.co.uk/Articles/Lelupiss.htm

Brownish silverish with black stripes? Hmm...are you sure it's African, though that's what it sounds like, and I'm betting it's Malawian, just cause most things are. It's definantly mislabeled. Perhaps it's a Pseudotropheus crabro, the bumblebee. That's the only Pseudo I could think of that would fit that description, though the kennyi, Pseudotropheus lombardoi, could fit the bill. Can you give us more of a description, body length, height, aggressiveness, hell, even how much you paid for him, that could narrow it down.

It was 7.00. It is not agressive and only about 2 inches long. The body is not elongated. It has a sort of beak looking mouth. and it is actually blackish silverish with black stripes. It has a black dorsal fin with a white top.

oops Sorry and thanks for fixing that. If you click on the top link that says more pics, there are many different pics of Tanganyikans there.

A beak? I dunno folks, maybe an Altolamprologus (calvus or compressiceps?)? That would explain the beak, and some geographic differences could explain the color, although I've always seen them more expensive. Is the head pretty straight but sloped down? This is an interesting post. Like Clue. I hated that game.

Sometimes people swap leleupi with longior, try searching for pseudotropheus elongatus Longior from Mbamba bay island or pesudotropheus mbamba.

It is none of those fish. Its mouth is a lot smaller then both of the altolamprologuses. I dont know wat else to describe about it.
