The title kind of says it all - Does Anyone have an easy method of portioning out the 1 lb frozen food flats

i used to buy the individual cubes for my smaller tank as I would only use 1 at a time - but now with my bigger tank and large number of fish, I need more - so I started buying the 1 lb packs of frozen bloodworms. Is there an easy way to cut these similiar size cubes in advance? or do you just break off a hunk when you need it?

I guess you could break off chunks that are te closest size that you want. I think that you can also hold the huge piece over the water and let a little piece go in the water so it defrosts and breaks up and the fish devouer it.

i use a hammer. resting the edge of the flat against the counter and a 1 inch thick [meat]cutting board at an angle. gramps would kill me if i got his [paper]cutting board all bloody but it might have the power to do it.

An easier way is to allow the food to defrost a bit and put some scores into it to allow you to break it off when it's frozen. You'll have to mess around with this a bit but it works quite well.

Try a good sturdy bread knife. I usually find these pretty good for cutting frozen things.

Spouses/parents/flat mates being what they are, it's probably best to have one dedicated to the purpose...:D

Thanks everyone for the input - so far I have used the place the corner over a side of the kitchen counter and whack it with a hammer method - LOL

I think I will try scoring it and then breaking it

Yea faramir - thats my problem ;) Probably gotta do this when the wife isn't home ;)

I always buy the 2# slabs ($9.95) and score it with a serrated knife and then just crack it on the edge of the sink. It doesn't take long to do the entire package and most times they come out in nice 1" square cubes. I then place all the pieces in a zip-loc bag and use them as needed.
