So, as many of you know, I'm getting ready to move from Wyoming the California. We're set to go--house is under contract, we close on Monday, most everything is packed up, Friday is to be my last day at work, pick up the moving truck on Monday, throw everything in and head out on Wednesday.
My work isn't happy with me leaving, but we'd hired a replacement, and I've spent the last 2 weeks getting everything I can wrapped up, and training her. There's a meeting in town most of my co-workers are at, and we brought her to a social to get to meet them, drink beer, etc. Fun time!
Just found out that her current employers made her an offer to stay, and she accepted.
So now, 3 DAYS before I leave, we are OOL. None of the other candidates interviewed were a good fit, there is no one here to back up the job. I can't change my plans to stay for longer.
So, now it looks like I'll be an employee here a tad longer, taking the laptop with me and working remotely from CA, then coming back here and training the new person for a couple of weeks, probably sometime in April--assuming they can advertise, interview, and select someone in the next 6 weeks). Jolly.
So not what I needed! At least I don't already have a job on CA to deal with. The plan was for me to wait to get a job until we had a house on base in CA and were moved in and settled...So, while not ideal, at least I can do this. Just sucks!

hoo-boy.... sorry to hear the plan is going to be a little different than expect... I hate when that happens. Good luck with it, OG..... however, I'm sure you'll be just fine... nerves have the tendency to be the death of some though, I know ;)

In your case, I'd look at the brigther side and see that as a nice experince with lost of travels involved. This may be advantageous (sp?), so you will have chances to get around your old house in case you find out later you have some kind of unfinished bussiness.
Just a thought. However, sorry your plans didn't come out as good as you expected thoug.
A personal note:
Most of the times, when I hear someone complaining and complaining about his/her job, I point them directly and say "Then, why don't you quit and leave room for someone else who's really apreciate your job?"
This leads to some nasty-eyed looks and Patoloco slowly moving out of the room.

Naw, I'm not prone to being nervous, more just annoyed to have plans changing at the last minute!
I actually have loved this job. It's been great for me, and my boss is the best. I'm sad to be leaving--part of the reason I was happy to train the new person was that way I would feel I was leaving my co-workers in good hands, instead of with a raw newbie. So it doesn't suck that I'll be working for them remotely, if anything, it's a nice pad to the old bank account. I told them that I would happily continue on as a full time employee from CA if they could make it work--they can't, in the long run. Just too costly to pay for my travel with an extra 1000 miles in between. :) It just sucks that I don't have a replacement, and that means less support for everyone here.

That really sucks. Sometimes I get really pissed off when this happens, aven if it's going to some place not far from home. Orion, take a deep breath and take thing easy and calm. Put a smile on your face and you'll see how things go smother this way.

Bluck. What a bummer. I hate last minute changes like that. Seriously. I'd be mostly annoyed with the girl who made arrangements to come and was so fickle that she backed out. I mean, she had to have had awhile to make sure she was sure she wanted the job and that it wouldn't be more advantageous to stay.
Like you said though, more money for you! And that's gotta look good for you that you didn't just skip out.

My boss came in and said he hasn't felt this way since high school--it's like we got dumped, 2 days before senior prom.
Sigh.

awww, that sucks..... but I know the feeling. Pretty crushing, thank God that they've got someone like you on their side though, O.... it must make it that much harder to watch you go when all is said & done....
oh what crappy turn of events! I feel the same way about leaving jobs with co-workers high and dry- i'm glad it works for you to stay on - it isn't usually easy to find people who already live in wyoming that don't have jobs and it's harder to get people to move in.
i moved to MN in december from Billings, MT- we looked for almost 8 months for a replacement before i left and in the final hour we found a woman who wanted the job, being friends w/ my boss i've talked to her since i left and i guess she's not working out that well- i feel kinda bad about it and i don't like the job i have so that makes it worse.
anyway that was too long a story - all i meant was i feel your pain ;)
cheers

Update: as of March 16, I will be a part time employee. We'd already submitted all the paperwork for me to quit, including payouts for my retirement account, leave, etc, so it was easier to just 're-hire' me as a temporary employee. I'll work this until they can advertise, interview and select someone else, then come back and train them for a week or two. I'll take the laptop and work remotely until then.
So, I'm un-employed for a whopping 5 days, including the weekend.

Well I'm sure it really sucks to have your plans changed on such short notice, but it must feel very good to know not just anyone can "fill your shoes". Probably may be a little hectic with the move and getting settled in, but you will get through it. Hope everything else goes well for you and you get those tanks set back up. ;)

 There have been several people saying that it's going to be tough to fill my shoes...'Cause I'm so tall!'
It'll work out, just a surprise. My boss is now wandering around saying 'The new Sheila is the old Sheila'.
Just allow yourself the luxury of telecommuting while you can... It is a delight IMHO.

Yep, think I will like that part. :) And, it will be a great excuse for going with a high-speed connection in our new house!
