So I have kept fish with plants for over 2 years now but have never really bothered to learn the basics of plant keeping. My problem is that any plant that is not a very thick or dark green seems to go brown wither and die (ie kabomba, onion plants etc...) I have been able to have java fern and anubis thrive in my tank but every thing else seems to wither. I don't use any kind of plant food and I just have a regular light source. Now I don't want to have award winning plants here I just want to be able to keep some that live. Some basic tips that don't get too scientific would be great. If you don't have time or have to look it up please don't bother as I realise some people don't like answering noob questions.

Ensure you are using a grow light. I use a regular GE aquarium/plant light that they sell and the hardware store. My 29gallon has two 20 watt bulbs, not quite enough, but it seems to be doing ok. Try cryps, they can do ok with a little less light. Also you might want to add co2. You can buy a tank system or try diy co2 (do a search and look for a forum called "diy co2 with pictures" or something allong those lines.) A trace elements supplement might be usefull too.

I'd start by looking at your tank size and height vs your lighting. With proper lighting you should be able to have more plants than those even in a low light set up.
