Hi all... hoping for some constructive discussion here. It has recently become clear to me that I have made some unwise choices for my aquarium inhabitants and I'm trying to rectify the situation. Here's what I have learned/come to grips with:
1) the boes rainbows have to go to a better home
As much as I love these fish and WISHED they would be ok in my tank, it is just too small to have a proper school
2) The tetras were a mistake... the neons have been exposed to NTD and it's possible they might be infected. The other lone tetras were somewhat of an impulse plus the person made a mistake and gave me one buenos aires and one silver tip instead of 2 buenos aires. It's really tough to get away from the notion that schooling fish are ok as singles or pairs when most of use grew up seeing just that - a tank with a huge variety of random fish. I do see the point though and am excited at the thought of seeing a real school of cories interact with each other. I really want to try and create a home that is best for the fish!
3) I NEVER should have started with livebearers! I don't know what I was thinking, I've been down this road before with swords and I didn't want to do it again... but the Platy's were so nice looking I got sucked in!!
OK - so now what? One of my original ideas for this aquarium was to make it a south american habitat. I would start with a pair of Rams and build from there... Well I got the pair but sadly one developed dropsy and I had to euthenize
I also adore corydoras and if I recall correctly, they are s.american too. Do oto's fit in that mix?
I think somewhere along the way I decided against the s.american idea because my tap water is so opposite of what s.american species prefer. Could I still manage it? What species might you recommend? One other issue with going this route is that it might be difficult to find the fish locally (and acclimated to our water)... I'm open to other ideas too.
It's a 44g corner tank so the footprint is smaller which limits the size of fish somewhat... Oh and PLEASE don't suggest that I should get a larger tank. Thanks!
