Stocking ideas/South American species tank?

Hi all... hoping for some constructive discussion here. It has recently become clear to me that I have made some unwise choices for my aquarium inhabitants and I'm trying to rectify the situation. Here's what I have learned/come to grips with:

1) the boes rainbows have to go to a better home :( As much as I love these fish and WISHED they would be ok in my tank, it is just too small to have a proper school

2) The tetras were a mistake... the neons have been exposed to NTD and it's possible they might be infected. The other lone tetras were somewhat of an impulse plus the person made a mistake and gave me one buenos aires and one silver tip instead of 2 buenos aires. It's really tough to get away from the notion that schooling fish are ok as singles or pairs when most of use grew up seeing just that - a tank with a huge variety of random fish. I do see the point though and am excited at the thought of seeing a real school of cories interact with each other. I really want to try and create a home that is best for the fish!

3) I NEVER should have started with livebearers! I don't know what I was thinking, I've been down this road before with swords and I didn't want to do it again... but the Platy's were so nice looking I got sucked in!!

OK - so now what? One of my original ideas for this aquarium was to make it a south american habitat. I would start with a pair of Rams and build from there... Well I got the pair but sadly one developed dropsy and I had to euthenize :( I also adore corydoras and if I recall correctly, they are s.american too. Do oto's fit in that mix?

I think somewhere along the way I decided against the s.american idea because my tap water is so opposite of what s.american species prefer. Could I still manage it? What species might you recommend? One other issue with going this route is that it might be difficult to find the fish locally (and acclimated to our water)... I'm open to other ideas too.

It's a 44g corner tank so the footprint is smaller which limits the size of fish somewhat... Oh and PLEASE don't suggest that I should get a larger tank. Thanks!

otos are south american so they should fit you criteria.

sounds like you have had some bad luck. Is the tank high? I think you have chose good fish in the past, but have just had bad luck with your fish. I'd go with an angelfish, 3 schools of smaller tetras, a pair of rams, and cories. That sounds like a beautiful tank.

If I was to start out a SA tank myself (the wait is killing me), then I would go with hatchetfish, pencilfish, otos, characidium, and aspidoras (or maybe corydoras, depending on which species I could get my hands on). That's just my personal dream tank ;)

Tetras also fit the bill, and there are countless varieties to choose from. Angels are also South American, as well as discus, but if it were my choice to make I would skip the larger fish and go with more smaller fish.

Mongabay will give you many options to ponder.

dwarf gouramis?

The 2 boeseman rainbows have been relocated and now I'm earnestly thinking about their replacements and further adjustments to the inhabitants of my tank...

I'd like to add to the blue ram numbers (3 total?) and possibly add some dwarf gourami - 2 males, 4-5 female perhaps. Do these fish generally do ok together?

I was previously thinking of a South American species tank but I'm not totally set on that. A school or 2 of tetras would be nice but wouldn't they get nippy with the rams? I prefer the larger tetras (like the two I have, buenos aires or silver tip) but if I decide not to add to their numbers I will find better homes for them.

I would also add to the cory numbers (6 total) and possibly add some oto's. I would likely leave the platies in the tank - their numbers have not increased and I'm hoping it will stay that way ;)

Any thoughts? If I went with 3 rams, 6 dwarf gourami, 6 cories, 3-4 oto's, and 4 platies would I be over stocked? If not what else could I add?

Angels an option?

What about:

2 angels
3 blue rams
6 cories
5 oto's
1 rainbow shark
1 rubbernose pleco
4 platies OR move the platies and go with 6 silver tip tetras

I would move the platies and go with the tetras.
