I have a 75 gal tank that i will be setting up. My question is ; I am pretty much sold on the eheim pro 11 but was wondering If I should get the next biggerr size 2128?? I know rocketman you have a eheim and some others have them also. thanks
If you can afford it, get the larger model. You almost never hear anyone say, "I wish I had bought a smaller filter...", and the larger Eheim is a better match for a 75.
I have the 2026 on my 72g. I wish I had gotten the bigger one, but alas it costs more. Mine is really fine for what I need it for, the only thing is it only has two baskets, and I think the bigger one has 3. Now I am going to add a prefilter to my intake to catch the bigger bits because it seems like they really get gunked up in the noodles.
If you are going to add a prefilter then you will no longer have any need for the sponge pads in the media compartment, since nearly all your mechanical filtering will be done by the prefilter. You might as well chuck the sponge pads and add more Efimech or Efisubstrat.
Now you tell me. I just finished cleaning out my canister and had my husband drill holes in the intake tube. I put an eheim biological prefilter foam on it and secured it with a rubber band. Seems to work just fine. I never even thought about the pads in the canister. Thanks.
Actually, if you continue to use Ehfisubstrat, you shouldn't forgo the fine white filter pad. In addition to mechanical filtration, it traps the fines - small particles of the sintered glass of which the Efhisubstrat is made - before the can get into the impeller well and cause excessive wear.
I like the idea, though, of using canisters primarily as prefiltered biofilters. I fill mine with Ehfimech and/or bioballs and use no filter pads or Ehfisubstrat at all.
So do I use bio-only inside my external canisters. But I don't rely on the prefilter for the canister to be the sole mechanical filtration for the tank. I do use other mechanical-only filtrers for that.
