Dwarf Horses in 5g Fuge?

I have a 5g refugium linked to a 20g FOWLR and am considering a small herd of Dwarf Horses. The fuge has a low flow rate, about 1.5-2" sand bed, and about 3lbs LR. I would like to add some macroalgae as well. The 20g is well established and the water quality remains high.

How many in a 5g? Lighting? Feeding (BBS and anything else?) Good place to get them? Does anybody have any suggestions, concerns, or thoughts about this?

I don't plan on rushing into anything, and it will be several months before I act on any additions. For now I'm just trying to learn what I can about Dwarfs. Thanks for any info!

I feel like I'm not in the "click" here. Do I not have enough posts to merit a response, am I asking bad questions, or does no one have an answer?

I have made several posts on this forum with limited results. Recently I have posted/ searched on www.aquariumadvice.com and had at least some feedback. I really like aquariacentral, my first forum, but I am daunted by the lack of response to my ?'s.

All I want is knowledge and insight. 17 views and not one response?

Point Made: A member of this forum made a post here and at aquariumadvice about the same topic. Within 4 hours at aquariumadvice that person recieved responses from 2 different people, but on this site I am the only one that has responded in over a day. The responses at aquariumadvice were honest and hopefully have helped an aspiring aquarium enthusiast.

I'm not soliciting for another site. I really like (and may be addicted to) aquariacentral, but have noticed that many posts go unanswered. It seems like people are afraid to reply. I know that everyone is looking for an answer to their question, but surely if you are interested in the title of a post you must have an opinion or further question so why not respond?

Hi There, i dont think there is a "clique" on on this website, if there is i am certainly not in it but i have no problem getting responses.

I found the follwing reference http://www.seahorse.org/library/articles/dwarfKeeping.shtml i am not sure of its credibility but it does state:

" 2-gallon tank can easily hold 5 pair including any babies that they may have."

I have no experiance either way but i have to admit i would be sceptical of that quote

Sorry if you're not getting responses. This question requires a certain specialized knowledge, and it looks like people are staying quiet rather than giving answers based on zero experience.

The marine side has always been a little slow around here, and it will be a little more so with Orion out for a while. We try.

Honestly, if you, or anyone reading this thread, knows a way to pep things up around here, I'm all ears.

Sorry about the rant, I was really just trying to give my post a bump to get a response, and I thank you both for your replies. I am sorry to hear that Oriongirl is taking some time away; she has made many helpfull posts. I have learned a lot from your posts too, Dan and Mo, Thank You!

Dan, i found the same link you gave me when i googled Hippocampus zosterae the other day. That is the only information that I have to go on right now, and I am also unsure of the article's validity. It is a pretty cool concept for a small tank though. I'll keep looking. Thanks again.

No worries about the rant. It also bugs me that things can be so slow around here. I could have chimed in earlier, but was really hoping that someone who knew dwarves would post.

I haven't kept dwarves, and am still a noob with SHs in general, but the plan doesn't sound too bad. Several pairs would probably do well, as far as I can tell. For suppliers, check out Dan at http://www.seahorsesource.com. The only down side to seahorses in a fuge is that they will reduce the pod population.

As far as the fuge itself, a 13 watt PC light would work pretty well for keeping macroalgae. Chaetomorpha is especially good for amphipods, and is the easiest to keep in my experience. You might also want to add some live rock rubble to give more nooks and crannies.

Thanks Mo, I have been reading more articles and I think that I will try the Dwarf Horses, but not until after I move in a few months.

In the time between I am going to develop the fuge as much as i can. I have about 2.5 lbs LR piled up in a corner of the fuge and the LFS gave me a nice patch of algae (very coarse and green, resembles a tumbleweed).

I haven't noticed any of the tiny copepods in main tanks in a long time, just the larger amphipods (or do I have the 2 confused?). Within a week of seting up the fuge I have tiny little pods all over the glass (acrylic).

I hope that the LR rubble pile will provide the Horses with a snackable population of pods, but it sounds like they really only need BBS.

For right now the fuge is lit by an 8 watt flourescent, but I plan on upgrading to a small PC fixture. The fuge is just a drilled generic version of an Eclipse system 6. It has the same filtration unit and light ballast. I removed the BioWheel but am running the carbon filter. I wonder if the intake to the filter or the opening to the bulkhead will pose a risk to the Horses?

BTW Mo, I really like what you have done with your SH tank. I would like to have a pair of reidi or erectus, but don't have the room now. My only concern with the Dwarves is that their life span seems to be around a year. Such a short lived creature, but it sounds like they breed pretty easily, so maybe I can raise a stable population.

Nope, you have it straight. Amphipods are usually bigger. The little ones may be copepods or isopods. In my tanks, they are usually isopods.

Yeah, I hear that they will do OK on BBS, but the added snacks should help keep them happier.

Thanks! I am still anxiously awaiting robust growth of the turtle grass, but it appears to be doing allright.
