testing stuff

Is there a way to test for potassium, iron, and other plant nutrients? I have kH tests and the charts so I can figure C02. I have seen some test kits online (none in LFS) but I don't want to spend that much on shipping.

Depends on what you want to test. There are Iron and K, test kits out there.

The elements that most hobbiests test for are N & P. K test kits are difficult to interpret at the hobbiest level and also in most cases inaccurate unless you spend big bucks for lab. quality kits.
The same can be said for Fe kits. Most hobbiests opt for the estimative method of dosing these elements and most of the other traces. There are charts and calculators available on line that will tell you how many PPM you are getting by dosing X number of tsp./tbsps. of all the nutrients.
The estimating is completely safe if a weekly water change of 30 - 50% is done on a regular basis.
