How big do balas have to be before they can spawn?

I have three 5" long balas in a 55 gallon and two seem to have paired off, and are swimming all over the tank right next to each other, literally touching everywhere they go. I have not seen any eggs yet but it sure seems like it wouldn't be long if they keep that up.

Opinion is somewhat divided, but the concensus is that breeding is fairly rare in aquaria, and that sexual maturity is reached at about 6".

mine do exactly the same, especially after feeding - one's about 4 inches the other 5 inches. no sign of any eggs/fry yet though.

Mine did that from 4" up to 9" when I sold them, often after feeding. I had them 4 years. I'm pretty sure its actually fighting.
