View Full Version : guess the fish (cichlid of course)
a friend of mine asked me to id this fish, i think the male died and they wanted to replace it. don't mind the cloudy eye, these pictures are older and that problem is resolved. any input appreciated, i'm kinda lost on this one. :)

Hmmm I dont think its compressiceps, but it looks like its possibly a type of Dimidiochromis. I'll look into it more for you.
Any chance on some more pictures?

Hmmm.
Well at first I was thinking something like a Protomelas taeniolatus, just because of the shape and coloration:

But then I was looking at that solid horizontal line and you dont often get a red empress with a line that solid. So I was thinking it could be a Dimidiochromis species, such as Dimidiochromis strigatus:

But with these new pictures the body just doesn't look elongated enough to be a Dimidiochromis.
Possible its a hybrid? I'll get Raf to take a look and let you know later on.

with the new pics, you're right ... definitely not Dimidochromis compressiceps and though strigatus was a better guess, i'm no longer sure it's any Dimidiochromis? maybe kiwinge?
based on new pics which show body shape and marked horizontal line, my new guesses include: Cheilochromis euchilus, Lethrinops lethrinus, Mylochromis lateristriga, Protomelas annectens, Protomelas macrodon
i don't think this is it.
Dimidiochromis compressiceps
the head on the pictures i'm pulling is alot more elongated than this fish. the colors kinda go all over the place, and could or could not be right.
the stubby head on this fish vs the elongated head on the pix i'm finding kind of says no tho. checking the other guesses now. :)
strigatus seems closer, but stilll has a little more head it seems like.
it might have been something that starts with p, so i'm checking those now. :)

With the full side body shot with fins open, and blue head. it is a dead ringer with my super red mepress males. Except this may not be super red variety. :) It looks to be in that family.
