I hope this doesn't seem silly, but can you get better lighting with the existing hood that came with the tank cover?
What Light upgrades are doine w/o changing the fixture?

you may be able to squeese a retrofit kit of somethign under there. you would probably have to run a fan under it too. How long is it? and how wide?
it owuld be easier, and if you arent a hand-person, probably better and safer to buy a new one.
