My saddleback clowns are getting bigger, and progressively meaner. They're shredding fins, biting their own reflections, and generally causing havoc in the 65g. We thought about giving them up, but I just can't do it. They're vicious, but somehow I've gotten rather attached to them. It took some doing, but after they killed one of our gobies I managed to convince my husband to let me set up just one more tank (he's a very patient soul :)) for the clowns.

We've got several reef tanks going, I wanted to do something different with this one and keep it on a tight budget. I thought a black and white theme would be neat, so here's what I came up with:
2 b & w saddlebacks
Hawaiian hermits
zebra turbos
nassarius snails
Astraea snails
white sand
black background
black sun coral

The tank is a Hagen Waterhome 'Euro-Pro' 21g (24"L x 14"W x 15"H) with a dual NO fluorescent canopy. I added 5lbs of Aragonite left over from another tank, 20lbs of live Bahamas Oolite sand and 5lbs of Fiji LR. Then I stole one of the Maxi-Jet powerheads from the 65g (there was a bit too much current for some of the corals' liking anyway), put some established bio media into the HOB filter that came with the tank, and presto! A new home for my little beasts. Thanks to the live sand and media, the cycle is coming along nicely; there are still traces of NO2, but no NH3 present. I think I'll be able to move the clowns in a week or so, which will be none too soon. Once they're in and settled, I'll see if I can order the sun coral from the LFS - they said it could take months to come in, but that's okay with me.

I don't want to eat up bandwith with all sorts of pictures, but here's a little one just to show you the tank:

I'll update as things progress :)

I brought home another 8lbs of LR today, it's been in a tank at work for about a zillion years so I'd say it's fully cured :) The tank looks fuller now, but there's still loads of swimming room. Levels are good, the crabs and snails are fine, everything is shaping up nicely :)
We had a little black and white four-stripe damsel my manager couldn't wait to get out of his tanks (I think he was a trade-in), so I brought him home and he's in the 21g now - if he doesn't get along with the clowns, I'll move him into the 5.5g.

I have a 3 stripe damsel in with my cinnamon clown. The damsel hides behind the powerhead most of the time. But when it is feeding time, he is the first one to the top of the tank.

Oooh can't wait to see the black sun coral!

BTW, have you considered Seachem's Tahitian Moon Sand for a black and white tank? It's jet black. Never seen it in a SW tank before and not sure of its composition, but a black substrate would definitely be different.

I did think about black sand, but because the silicone, background, trim, canopy and stand are black I wanted to balance it with white sand. I've also heard fantastic things about Bahamas Oolite live sand, so I couldn't pass it up.
Dave - there's not much light on the tank, just 30W of NO fluorescent, but (cheesy as this may sound) I've thought about getting them a fake anemone, since I might be able to find a white one and there are some that actually look fairly real.
NH3 and NO2 are 0 this morning, NO3 ~5ppm - hooray for fully cured rock! The little damsel is happily cruising around the tank, head-butting hermits off the rockwork :D When I researched these guys everything I read said they'd do best with 'equally agressive' fish, so I'm crossing my fingers that he'll get along with the clowns. The clowns are still trying to take over the 65g, they have NO idea what's about to happen! I know 21g is a bit small for them, but I think they'll be less stressed without 7 other tankmates to worry about.
I'll try to get a picture up tonight.

I should know by now, nothing ever goes as planned! I wanted to wait for at least a week to add the clowns, but this evening I watched them go on a rampage, biting EVERYTHING and shredding tails, and couldn't bear to watch any longer. My sand-sifting goby hasn't come out all evening and from the looks of the sand she's been barricaded inside her cave all day as well.
Tonight I caught the beasts with little trouble - they're both 'runners', but were easily persuaded into a bag from the fish store (male) and a net (female). 10 minutes after being unceremoniously dumped into the 21g (I made sure the parameters matched when I set it up, for just this reason) they were eating and bashing their sweet little heads off the glass at me :D
The damsel seems a little confused, but not upset - the female saddleback is chasing him a little, but he's giving it right back. I'm hoping they'll quickly figure out that neither is going to back down and just agree to disagree.
