we got an emperor 400 a long long long time ago (probably 7 years... or as soon as they came out)

well, it was a great filter, then it just mainly stopped working.

It seems to flow just as good, but its not picking up any dirt on the filterpads. We had the same filterpad in for 2+ months, and it didnt even get dirty.

It seems that when i cleaned it out, it would flow REALLY good, then a week later, it would slow down a bit, but not much... but it still never picked up any dirt.

What do you guys think is wrong with it? I would like to use it on a future tank, if possible... Thanks

Hey I bought one of the 400s last year and I am not impressed with it at all. I took it apart and cleaned the impellor and all that stuff and it works like you said for a couple weeks and then it starts to slow down. Personally I am more impressed with the whisper hang on the back I have on the same tank. It does a way better job. Personally I do not believe the 400 is rated for 400 gph. I have a big whisper like I said and it seems like it puts out a lot more water than the 400. I think the problem is that the lift tube is too fat for the size of impellor. I think the big tube and small impellor slows the pull down a lot. I think if they would have designed it with a better impellor or a small tube for the same impellor it would be a better filter. Also, one reason I think that the flow rate slows down is because of the spray bars. It uses a lot of the impellors force and without them the filter would run stronger. I'm only 17 years old and let me tell you, I could have designed a better filter than the 400.
