I just noticed a weird film on the top of my 10 gal. tank. It kind of looks like when gasoline mixes with water. And it's just on the top of the water. I changed filters last night but it hasn't made a difference yet. The fish seem to be doing fine still. Just wondering if I should be worried and do something else. Thanks.
No, not a big problem. This is just a protein deposit film, or at least a film of something that is lighter than water. There's lot of stuff in your water, this is just one more thing. If you ever let your water level down, beyond the point of either your HOB filter or the spraybar of your cannister filter, then you should see this go away as the greater surface agitation will break up the film. Now, you are seeing this film and you have an airstone in your tank, then we've got something else.

The next time you cut your filter, drag a piece of paper towel across the surface to take up the slick.
