how long does it usually take for a bio-wheel to colonize, and start slowing down?

The one in my dads tank has been going for 2 weeks now, and is still spinning 500RPM

It can take 4-6 weeks for it to colonize. Slowing is caused by either a clogged impeller and/or intake tube and strainer. It can also be caused by uneven colonization. The BIO-Wheel may slow or temporarily stop, but don't bother it unless it completly stops. Then you just have to swish/rinse it in AQUARIUM WATER ONLY!!! I always rinsed mine after I did my water change. When you do your monthly maintenance on the filter, remove BIO-Wheel and float it in aquarium water to keep it moist.
