Im getting a new tank and I'm thinking about using eco complete. I just wanted to know whether it looks natural in an aquarium and if not, is there a more natural looking substrate that serves the same purpose?

Is it possible to get less than 20 lbs or is that the smallest size?

One option is to use it as a bottom layer and put regular gravel on top. That way you get the benifit of eco complete, plus the more natural look.

What about siphoning? Wouldn't that make the 2 substrates mix?

One more question. How many bags would I need for a 29 gallon?

If your tank is heavily planted then you only need to siphon the very top of the gravel. The fish poo is a good fert. I would probably put about an inch as the top layer. As far as how much you need, someone else will have to help you there. I just use gravel and let the fish poo be my root fert; and dose with flourish. Seems to be working pretty good.

Eco-complete looks very natural--it looks like dirt. One tank I have is all eco-complete, the other has a layer of gravel over the eco-complete. It's expensive but I've had great success growing plants in it. I would think you'd need a couple of bags for a 29G.

Its a very dark gray almost black with variable sized grains, seems fairly natural to me.

I put three bags into my 30g for a moderate depth. I'd think two would be fine for a 29g but you could go to three if you wanted.
