I bought amano srhimp a while ago hoping they would rid my tank of hair algae. They didn't, but the hair algae went away by itself. Then I set up a 50 gallon planted and algae is consuming the plants. All the anubias are getting the short fuzzy looking algae, i think its beard algae or fur algae. I cut some more anubias out of the 30 with the shrimp and placed them in the 50 to see how they would do. They quickly became covered in algae. Then I put them back into the 30 and within 2 days, the shrimps had eaten all of the algae off of the anubias. They look good as new, except for the hole in the one leaf.
One thing I think contributed to this is that I dont feed the shrimp. They forage whatever they can. I just feed the fish. So they do their job when they are hungry.

so here are some hints to getting amano shrimp to do their job:

1) Dont feed them and make sure they dont get much fish food.
2) Provide them with algae in the tank. If there isnt any, then dont buy the shrimp.
3) Have alot of shrimp, otherwise it will be a slow job and the shrimp will have more crap to eat which will make it less prone to consume alot of algae.

so I reccamend amano shrimp as algae eaters, so long as they aren't fed anything but algae.

Here, at 2 dollars each, enough amano shrimp for a 55G could cost a fortune. But if you can afford em, I do agree that you should get them.

They usually have some in the first tanks in the aisle furthest tank to the left when you enter the first floor. Thats where they keep all the algae eaters like SAE's, otos, and amanos. I got 5 otos, maybe they'll have some amanos back in stock soon.

Mr. J: I didn't even know there was a food for shrimp :o How do shrimp affect your bio-load? Does a 1.5" shrimp = 1.5" of fish? How many shrimp would you recomend for a 30 Gallon tank? I have two Amanos that constantly eat but it is hard to tell just what it is they are eating.

BTW, love the lyrics. What type of music does that band play?

Finding a growing number of Christians on AC... :)

Not Fish related, (actually, I guess Jesus did have a rather interesting run in with some fish, and a few loaves of bread...) but Bravo!

The band is Cross Movemet, which is Christian Rap. For those of you who aren't Christian and think that Rap is only for the thugs, dont start saying that Christian rap must be crap, cause its not.

On the note of Shrimp, I have 5 in my 30 and they cleaned about 15 leaves from two anubias plants rather quickly. If you feed your fish and the flakes reach the bottom, more likely than not, the shrimp will eat the food. They also eat poop sometimes, which I think is kinda funny, but I dont know how healthy it is. But anything that reaches the bottom is food for the shrimp. My shrimp got smart and they go to the surface and grab a flake when I feed the fish. Nevertheless, they dont get much in the way of food, so they ate the algae out of the 30.

I dont include shrimp into my bioload, but then again, I dont have a big bio load. I dont think they produce much waste, so I dont reccamend worrying about how many you have, unless you can't feed them.

Shrimp work very well for most algae.
Try buying in bulk, eg 50 or 100 at a time for a much reduced rate.
I get them from 45-80 cents ea at these amounts.

Rap should obviously be a next step in Christian music. Nothing like soul music though, get those "chills" from that. My church is nature, that's where I go to be closer with the creator and marvel at the increbible complexity. Nature should be preserved as it's as much of the creator as it is ourselves.

Tom Barr

Tom, if you enjoy nature now, get yourself ready (http://bible.gospelcom.net/cgi-bin/bible?language=english&version=NIV&passage=john+3%3A1-4&x=11&y=12) for when the Creator restores paradise!

Mr. J: Not a big fan of rap, unless it glorifies Jesus (or sounds like DC Talk). BTW, it is amazing to me how scrawny, spindly shrimp can defend themselves!

Dustin: Yep, were here ;) I try to avoid putting my faith down others throats, but as the song says, "I will not go quietly!"

tom: if youre saying you dont go to church and consider yourself a Christian let me discuss something:

Many churches may not be run in a glorifying manner and many of the people that go to some churches may not be genuine in their faith, but belonging to a body of believers is something God calls us to do. Its scriptural. So if you dont go to church, I suggest belonging to some sort of Christian group, like a bible study or something. Cause living a life of solitude as a Christian isn't as benificial to your relationship with God and his people as actually being involved in a Christian community.

but if I just totally missed the point of you saying nature was your church, tell me.

to remain on topic so people dont get mad at me, yeah, shrimp can be fiesty. My shrimp, however, just shoot away from whatever is bothering them.

btw, I want some shrimp in with blue acaras, does anyone think that would be alright?

Much of what I believe is centered in what I see. I have faith in plants, life, creation etc. These are part of God to me. My GF was the minister for the largest Church in TN at one time. Many in my family possess deep convictions and involvements. I have fully discussed the religion of several faiths. I am at 100% peace with this and what I am doing in life. Folks like to interpert things to make what they believe their point/opinions. Living and practicing this awareness is more important to me than hanging out with others discussing the issues but ....some folks do indeed need to satisfy this. That's fine. I am just not one of those people most of the time. Some need reminders, I get mine seeing nature. Sometimes I do discuss things, but when it happens, it happens.

God gave me a brain and reason, not using it is "sin", letting my self and everyone else around me down IMO. Folks owe it to themselves to live up to their potential. But that's their free will to do so or not. Like everyone, I may seem conservative on some issues(the ten commandments), perhaps radical on others(Evolution).

Changing a bad to a good is my goal with plants, life and people. It's pretty fun/satisfying. If I can change a few folk's bad day into a good one, seems like a good deal to me. By helping others, you help yourself. It's what comes out of you that counts. This is universal. And it can be applied to planted tanks even.

Thou shalt grow thy fruitful plants without the evils of algae. So go forth and plant, focus on thy plants, not on the evils of algae.

Tom Barr

You have helped me both directly and indirectly on a number of occasions. Because of that help, my planted tank is stable and thriving. Thank you :)

Tom, I would love to discuss this with you further at a more appropriate place. I believe your position on this matter is untenable, espcially for one who puts as much thought into matters as you do.

Adding PO4 was blasphemy at one point, now the church elders have seen the light(PC, MH's etc). The truth shall set you(and your plants) free.

I guess I was 4 YO when I got up in front on a sermon at a large congregation, escaping my mother's grasp, my grandfather, got a hold of me(he was the minister) and kept on speaking while setting me on his side. I placed my hand over his mouth about then as he continued to talk. He responds to congregation
"I bet you all have been wanting to do that for years". :)

Okay, I'll get off the plant pulpit:)

"I bet you all have been wanting to do that for years".

That's hilarious! My pastor will enjoy that one :p

BTW Tom, How do Amano shrimp factor into the bio-load? I would like to get more, but I want to keep my bio-load on the lighter side.

I would also love to discuss that other topic with you some other place, some other time...
