Opinion on this DIY filter

I found these instructions for a DIY filter. I would intend to use it in a 50 gallon bin for a turtle, not for a pond. Any opinions or suggestions for improvement? I need something internal since floor space is at a premium. Any other suggestion for something DIY would be appreciated.

Looks like it would work pretty well as long as you remember to clean it regularly. Looks like it would be easy to get lazy about it.

That's a great site. I would think that the lack of water flow would remind you to clean it. The only thing I would worry about in a tank is the room it would take up,

I think it would work, although it may not be very pretty to look at in the tank. For use in a pond, it would be harder to see it.
