I have a 46 bow front tank with 6 South American Cichlids in it. Has been set up since the first week of January 2006. My problem is that the tank is always somewhat cloudy. It looks like dust flowing around in the tank. I have a Penguin 400 filter/pump on it. I have never added any chemicals ever and would like to know how to get the water to become clear. I change 20% of the water every 2 weeks and it will look good for a couple of days. Any suggestions will be great.

Thanks!!

What kind of fish and how big? Feeding schedule?

any malaysian driftwood in the tank?

Is the cloudiness white or green?

What do you do with your filter media when you do a water change?

Have you tested you ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

Most times cloudiness is caused by overstocking, overfeeding, or damage to the tanks biofilter. I have one slightly cloudy tank that is way understocked and gets 50% weekly water changes. This tank has a ton of malaysian driftwood in it however. I blame it on that, sinse all other parameters and husbandry practices are tip top.

I had that problem a few days ago ... I did a 50% waterchange, a very thorough siphoning (moved everything out of the way) and changed the carbon ....

carbon doesn't really last long (what? a week at hte most?) ...

It cleared my problem right up ...

I think my problem was a dead ghost shrimp somewhere that caused a bacteria bloom. Though I can only assume my cory ate most of it there must have been something left in the tank ...

Either way it's gone now and I don't see any signs of it coming back.

I'm wondering about these bacteria blooms too. My 20 g tank has been cloudy for 4 wks now. It seems to get worse the day after a water change then goes back to it's milky-ish swirl cloudyness with suds around the rim. I've read that it will just go away on it's own but how long is too long? Water changes every 2 wks, should i do more? less? medicate? numbers are all within normal ranges and tank has been up and running for over a year. thanks in advance...
