i have put a sock on the end of it (not the intake) but that part where the water comes out of, that way i dont have to worry about the stuff it picks up getting back into the water. and dont worry, it was a new sock and i still rinsed it off very well... one more thing, does anyone know how to make a tap water filter? i know this belongs in DIY, but hardly anyone goes there.

Hagen makes a "quickfilter" that attaches to the intake of most powerheads. They are pretty cheap and last quit a while.

I use a power head for circulation with no attachment. Good circulation will help break down fish waste and promote bio filtration. You can achieve the same effect as a canister filter for a fraction of the cost. A sock will work similar to a vacuum cleaner. But doen't it look strange with a waving flag at the end?

what do you mean by "You can achieve the same effect as a canister filter for a fraction of the cost?" and it does look a little weird with the "flag", but it works really well.....
