Im about to move cross country and would like to change my tank from a fo to a reef i plan on doing all my live rock in a pyramid in the middle of the tank. I plan on buildn a island from the wall out so my tank is veiwable from both sides. If i put the mh directly over the pyramid of rock will that be enough. And also which is the best bulb to purchase.

If all of your corals will be in a 2ft X 2ft area, then a single 250 watt lamp will be sufficient. "Best" depends a lot on what you want. The 6500 K Iwasaki gives the most usable light (photosynthetically available radiation) of any lamp available, but many people don't like the intense white or even slightly yellow light it puts out. The next best in terms of PAR is the XM 10000 K. I use them, but, again, they are a bit too white for some. To get an idea of what different lamps look like, and their PAR values, check out Joe Burger's cnidarian reef.
