I need a low temp (I think that's the term) flourescent bulb for my tank hood. It isn't planted, so I want something that isn't going to encourage algae growth. I've heard that you want a low temp for that, but I'm not sure that's what I need. Can anyone reccommend a brand? Looking on Petsmart.com there aren't really any that list their temps. I did try an incandescent hood but I didn't like the color and my fish stayed away from the top because it made the water really warm.

A color temp bulb won't help stop algae. Get whatever looks good to you, most people prefer kelvin rating in the range of 6,500k (daylight)-10,000k. To fight algae don't leave the lights on for too long, leave it on only when you're viewing or less than 8hrs.

Yep if there are no plants then get a bulb that looks good. Daylight is a good light, no need for a grow light.
