Often times, I hear noises in the night from my tank. Like splashing at the very top of the water. It sounds like when one of them pounces a peice of food at feeding time? What is happening in the tank to cause this..there is no food there. Is it an insect falling in at night and the fish swimming to grab it or what?

well..off to bed for me...

My loaches spend the night trying to "escape" from my tank, by whacking their heads against the tank hood. The cichlids and plecos dig around in the gravel.

I honestly never thought fish-keeping would be such a noisy hobby! LoL

If you have Labyrinths (gourami's) or Corydoras, these noises are usually them taking a gulp of air at from the surface.

My cories like to nibble at the top of the plastic rim that surrounds the tank on top. I think really they are gathering any food that is floating on the surface. But I hear them.....

I have seen my Oscar do this and to me it looks as though he is going after the air bubbles that are floating on top. I believe he thinks they are pellets and is trying to eat them.

besides hearing my gourami and bettas breathing from the surface at night, i can also hear the african dwarf frogs *singing* or whatever it is you want to call it, lol.....quite amusing actually :)

Every so often my pleco will race to the top of the tank for a gulp of air. Quite disturbing when you aren't ready for it. My loaches will make smacking noises with the air bubbles on the surface of the tank as well. :D

yeah, i get the same thing. i think one of my corys has brain damage. it keeps shooting to the surface of water, but unlike my other corys, he goes a little faster and hits the hood. then goes back to the bottom like nothing happened. it's like...blooop-bam-blooop. it only happens like once a night when i'm going to sleep, but it sure is annoying right when you're about to go to sleep.

I have loaches do that too. I heard that when corys do that it means that the water is bad.

Few years ago i got a clown knife that eat feeders at night, you can hear the WHAM! on the glass when it is a feeder near the glass, after that, sound of the gravel falling.Try getting a croaking gourami, they make soft croaking sound but i never got one of those before.
