Fish for a 5 gallon tank

I have just finished cycling a 5 gallon tank that i have in my bedroom. What kind of fish does anyone recommend for this tank and how many of that kind? :confused:

depends on your level of experience...for beginners, and avg aquarists a Betta would be about right.... as would 5-6 neons, or guppies. There are a few Rasbora species suited for a tank this size, but I wouldn't recommend them for a new tank.

i recommend a big red oscar the like small tanks dont they..........


just joshin 5 gallon tank hey even the water in that dont is crampt i say a nice red fighter with a midget sucker to keep the algea under controle put a few plants in light leaved and heavy leaved and soon u will have the most bueatiful fish with its long finnage feed him some colour inhansing pellets along with blood worms,brine shrimp,and some vegatable concumtion as well i love that setup i might do it my self but a 20 gallon tank thanks

5 gallon is a super luxury for a Betta, IF you don't mind having just 1 fish there. they're still very interesting to look at.

if i had a i think its 2 or 3 gallon plastic tank would i need a heater or would it be right on top of my light for a fighter

You could try badis badis or some of the smaller tetras. If you're going to get a pleco, go for the smaller species. Common plecs get way too big(10+ inches).

I have a 6 gal tank and have 4 bumble bee golbies in it. they are doing just fine. You must remember to feed fresh brine shrimp or frozen blood worms and or frozen brine shrimp for they do not do well on lake food. good luck. dona:p

guppies would be nice. I have about 30 (whoops...32 now..no no 33.) feeder guppies in a 6 gallon eclipse tank.

Ok, I am gonna recommend a few fish that no one here has recommended. I like being a little different.

1. You could try the least killie Heterandria formosa (smallest live bearer). Females get about an inch and half, while the males are under an inch. You can keep about a dozen in a 5 gallon tank, just make sure it is heavly planted.

2. a pair of pygmy sunfish, either Elassoma zonatum or Elassoma okeefenokee. But this would be a tank for the more advanced aquarist. These guys need live food. But they are very pretty and would make an interesting and different tank.

3. How about a Paradise fish. These are cheaper than Bettas. I find them more striking in coloration. I currently have one in a 2.5 gallon aquarium. This guy has the most personality of any fish I ever had. He is fully aware of everything that goes on here at my desk at work.

I also recommend with what ever you have, Malaysian Trumpet Snails. They are a great cleaner for substrate and the sides. I also keep ghost shrimp.

like 6 neons and a some kinda dwarf ram or other apisto's.
I know the ram wont be happy forever but pair purchaced small will enjoy living in a 5.5 for a year or two.
Dwarf frogs like that size.We just got some male "enders"guppys and OMGthey are awesome.Dwarf puffer comes to mind.
Also if you have other grow out tanks full size is not as big of a concern.

Thank you all for the input!!! I think i know which fish i'll get for my tank. I do love those neon tetras. I have ten of those in my 20 gallon with 2 dalmation mollies.
