Came across a large and rather interesting fireworm at LFS the other day and I have considered taking it home. So far I have had very little success at researching it. The worms defenses appear to be formidable to say the least, and given that they eat corals would it be safe in an aggressive tank or would the fish ignore the rows of stinging bristles and eat it anyway? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

they aren't very good aquarium inhabitants, as they have specialized diets, poor aquarium suvival rates, and are dangerous to anything in the tank with them because of their spines. best if left at your LFS!

I could be wrong, but I think I read once that they eat fish as well (when there sleeping). Ya, best left at the LFS.

EDIT: found the article where I *thought* I read that they eat fish, turns out I was thinking of something else. :duh:

Aside from being harmful to your fish, when you are doing maintainance in the tank, they could sting you and it's VERY painful. Some people have even had allergic reactions. Save you and your fish suffering and leave it at the LFS.

There are several species of polychaetes that are called fireworms. Most will scavenge, and several will eat corals, especially gorgonians. I have not seen evidence of them eating fish or causing them distress.

In terms of care, almost all are extremely easy to keep alive and healthy. Getting them out of the tank if they cause problems can be more difficult.

Have a look at this article by Ron Shimek, it may help: http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-04/rs/index.php
