I have a spare 5 gallon tank and would like to try one of these critters. Anyone have any suggestions before I go for it? I'm thinking of just a single guy...no tankmates. Just some plants, driftwood and sand bottom ( real sand from the beach )

For a filter, I was going to use a penguin mini which I have as well as a small heater.

Hey

you know you could probably do 2-3 puffers! As for feeding them they will love bloodworms, tubifex and flake. Be aware that they probably wont 'puff' as it where.

I agree with Flagfish. In a 5g you'll have enough space for 2, possibly even 3 if you make sure that you have 1 male/2 female. 2 males will work in the 5g, just make sure that you have enough plants and stuff, to make it easier for them to stake their own territory.

Mine eat bloodworms, brine shrimp and grindal worms. Either alive (better, they love to hunt) or frozen (which is funny too, because they'll actually stalk a dead bloodworm). I've had zero luck with flake or pellet food, but I'm not complaining because mine will eat frozen food.

Yea. i would go for 2-3 in the 5. If you add plants and some small driftwood or rocks, it will look pretty nice. For a while they will hide amongst the plants and peer out at you when you come by, but soon enough they will get pretty comftorable and come right up to the glass and look at you :)

Also i've heard its not good to use sand from the beach because much of it calcerous (made up of calcium), which can increase the hardness of the water.

with dwarf puffers, from the research i have done before i got mine, i read that its best to allow 3-5 gallons of water per puffer. and to have a tank that is planted and have hiding spaces to they dont become too aggressive.
thats what i have read, i may be wrong though.

Hi guys thanks for the reply. See I read the same about the 3-5 gallons per fish or they get aggressive. So is that a very conservative rule of thumb then? Do they actually get along... I mean I know fish dont make friends but do they seem to mind each others company in the tank you guys have or do they quarrel often?

I'd put a bit of decor or plants or what-have-you to make the environment more intersting for them to explore, and to cut down on aggressive behavior.

Mine have never taken flake food.

that is true, i have not been able to get mine to eat flake food. and the guy i got them from said he was not able to get them to eat flake in the 8 months that he had them. they do like frozen blood worms. i have 2 female and 1 male and they get a long really well.

The two in my tank will occasionaly nip at each other, but its pretty rare, and nothing serious. Having alot of plants helps too so that if one decides to be aggressive, the other can get away before anything happens. They ingnore the oto and ADF's completely.

I feed em frozen blood worms as well and they love em :)
