I have always put the background on the outside of the tank. Used to use tape put now I use oil to adhere it. Someone just today told me that the shiny LFS backgrounds are designed to go on the inside of the tank? Any truth to this and if so, how are you adhering it to the glass? Thanks

I use vegetable oil to attach mine. I smear the background with oil and then use something fat to squeeze out the bubbles.

I know there ARE backgrounds made that go inside the tank, such as those beautiful expensive and unavaible in the USA fake rock things, but I see no reason at all to put a flat sheet inside the tank. It's nice that it is waterproof, but the oil method mentioned above will give a seamless look without one more thing inside the tank.

Tom, I have seen these filter/backgrounds in the store I frequent the most. I imagine the reason you don't see them around is because of the cost but they are pretty neat looking and also take the place of a filter. Check them out at www.scenicfilter.com

...plus, check out some links to those Swedish "Back-to-Nature" fake rocks, at www.skepticalaquarist.com in the Landscaping folder on the Rocks page!
That "Amazonas" background with the tree root...

Z man...those filter/backgrounds are so cool looking:)
Well I went to see them again at THE Fish Place, not to be confused with THAT FP. The 10 gal 'full' filter background was $45 which is about $20 less than the price on the site. We figured if you didn't have to buy a filter or gravel or any rock formations, the price wasn't too bad. The manufacturer also sells just backgrounds but what I saw today covers both the back AND the tank bottom. There is also a place to slide your heater in so it doesn't show. Really neat looking but I have about 80 tanks and it sure wouldn't be worth the money for me.

I screwed around with stick on backgrounds and never liked them. Tried tape and oil. Then I painted my background. Love it.
