Hello, I am new here. I have a problem. Just bought a brand new allglass 65 reef ready, and a model 3 sump. I put a 900 gph pump, recommended by my local aquarium shop. My system is surging. The spillover is filling up then pulling down. When this happens the sump gurgles and makes all kinds of noise. The pump is next to the sump all connected with 3/4" id hose. I put a valve inline on the return line. The only way to stop the surging is to choke down the return line. But this slows everything down, and I am scared it will not be enough flow. I have the sump in backwards so the drain line would be as straight as possible. He has a setup like mine in his shop but his sump is in where the intake on the sump is right below the drain in the tank, and he has the drain line looped. I called allglass and they said the pump was too much and I needed a 600gph. I went over and told him this and he told me the 900 is what I need. Please help me with this, any suggestions or comments would be helpful. Thanks, Eddie

Welcome, Eddie,

All-glass is right, the overflow can only handle 600 gph. If I understand correctly, you are using 3/4" hose from the overflow to the sump. It is designed for 1", which means that the overflow is delivering even less than 600 gph. That will make the situation a bit worse.

I used a mag 9.5 with an All-Glass Megaflow tank, and had to throttle it down the whole time. FiInally replaced it with a mag 7, and it's fine.

You really don't need that much flow through the sump anyway. If you want more circulation, add a few powerheads or a closed loop.

I have the stock drain from all glass. I think its 1", kinda looks like vacuum cleaner hose. The return line is 3/4" i.d. I got it fixed, had to do some rigging, and minimum choke down on the line. It has very good flow now. Thanks, Eddie
