That's sweet Kuhli! If only I had a router.
Personally, I don't care for colored stains on furniture. It would look great, just not what I would do. Thanks for sharing!

Good job, beautiful cabinet. I will soon be building a fully enclosed cabinet to hold a 90 Gal. One question, why do most retail and DIY stands/cabinets have holes cutout on the top surface where the tank sits. My only guess would be to prevent water from sitting under the tank, and to aid evaporation of any spilled water. Am I right or is there another purpose, is this required.

Very nicely done. It looks better than many professionally built stands. What type of wood did you use? Is it solid wood or did you use some plywood? Also for what size tank did you build it?

I built it from fine grained pine. There is plywood on the back and sides. The corners are screwed clamped and glued. There is loads of internal bracingyou can't see from the outside.
I made it for a 70 gallon loach tank.

mchernecki- I believe the holes are as you guessed. It also prevents condensation building up under the tank/on the wood since there is a temperature gradient between the tank and the air outside of it.

haha I always thought they left the space because it uses less wood........aka cheaper!! :) (Not on tank stands with an actual CUTOUT, but ones that the tops are 4 pieces of wood connected in a rectangle)

Very nice. I would stain it like an oak color.
