The Temp in all my tanks is on the rise as we have been having a really bad heat wave. The Ambient temp in my room has been reaching around 95 degrees, everything in my room is suffering including myself.

My DP's tank is hitting 90 deg water temp every day, the DP does not seem to mind but I am concerned for his well being. I have no heater in teh tank and have been leaving the lid propped up on the 3 gallon eclipse to help with the heat. The lights are now on a night schedule, luckily It actualy gets cold here at night since we get an offshore breeze at night.

Floating Ice is really not much of an option as I am away from my tank durring the daytime.

My 20 gallon and 10 gallon are experienceing higher temps but I have the lights on a day schedule time, they are often up to as much as 86 deg. Everything appears to be thriving in these two tanks though I would never elect to keep them at these temps.

I bought a portable AC that I can turn on when I am at home...Not sure what to do when I am away as I don't want to run it all the time.

Are all my fish in danger?

you could try using a fan to blow air across the water surface. it'll use much less energy than the a/c and should be good for dropping the water temp 5 degrees or more. good luck.

Theres not really an easy way to do that with the eclipse unit, I do leave teh lid flipped up when possible. Still in a heat wave and with 100+ degrees I'm afraid of coming home to puffer stew. I hope he can make it untill the heat wave ends next week.

The fan blowing across open water is the best idea, and does lower the temps by approx 5 degrees.

However, fish can survive in temps of 90 for a couple of weeks, and can be benficial by striving off parasites, whitespot etc who can't tolerate above 86. However, pay close attention to your water quality...

Morning. I completely understand the heatwave deal. We were at 112 the other day. It is 7 am and is already 80. We have opened the tops of the tanks, been running fans. It really has helped.

Also if your freeze some water bottles/bags and float them it will help.

Good luck, stay cool.

Oh yeah, Justintoxicated, I tried to send this as a PM. Your are full, fyi.

I lost my dwarf puffer this weekend to the heat. :( I was out of town this week and had no idea this heat wave would hit while I was gone. I had my dwarf in a 5 gallon tank and the water temperature was at 95 degrees when I got home. I lost some fish in my 40 gallon too. Hopefully if you let you let your tank cool off at night things will be ok. Since I was not home I kept all my windows closed and the heat just built up inside.

I'm sorry to hear that you lost fish due to the heat wave... I sympathize. My tank stayed at about 92 - 93 degrees for several days during our recent heat wave and I felt so helpless. We don't have air conditioning and our house was like an oven. I lost two tetras, and I presume it was due to the water temperature.

Thanks for everyones advice and the heads up on the inbox, I do run thr AC at night it was a great investment! $500 later for the portable unit and I could actualy bear to be in my room. I did not lose any fish while at work luckily! Whew.

Sorry to hear of your losses, theres not really anything you could have done
:(

wow, it makes me feel fortunate that I live in alaska hearing about all these overheated tanks.
