37 Gallons But A Fish Ain't (In) One

Hey everybody, I've lurked at aquaria central for quite a while without registering but decided to do so before I head off to work. I havea 37 gallon (somewhat "tall") aquarium with a relatively high pH (around 8.0). Problem is, I can't really think of anything to put in it. The pH seems good for african cichlids, but I really seem to have a limited amount of space. The substrate is sand, but other than that, there's really not much else in there. So I was wondering if there's anyone out there who can help me with some fish setup ideas? I'm stumped.

Hi and welcome!

Don't be put off by your PH level. Many fish were bred and can live in PH that differs from their original optimum environment. A stable PH is probably more important than a "perfect" PH, and a slow acclimatization process of new fish to your tank will ensure survival.

Not sure if your tank is cycled yet, but if not you can do it while you research your fish. Here's a link to info on how to cycle your tank if you're not already familiar with the concept:

37 gallons is a nice size tank--do you mean that you have "a limited amount of space" because it is a tall tank?

i have that same exact tank, and im preping that tank for 4 red belly piranah :coffee2:

Well, I originally thought about putting a couple of electric yellows in there to breed, but I got a lot of negative feedback on not attempting that in anything other than a 55 gal. The tank is already cycled, but thanks for the advice!

A 37g has the same footprint as a 29/20 long/25g, so I think it's becuase the tank is taller than usual.

Bettas and most gouramies should make exclent "centerpiece" fish(es) for that tank size, although I'm not sure what there water references are, however they should be able to adapt no prob to your water.

With that high Ph and sand substrate you could get a few shell dwellers.

I like the sound of this. Does anyone have ideas what species of shellies would work well in such a setting? Thanks for all the help, guys!
