Brine Shrimp

I believe they're brackish and need to be in a brackish setup in order to survive. Just how brackish? I'm not sure, the most I did with raising them is getting one of those "sea monkey kits" when I was 11 years old or so......so maybe someone else can help you in that area.

What did you do with the brine shrimp once you got them home?

Here's what I do with live brine: Setup a small tank (5 gallon). Fillit half way with CLEAN salted water (sp should be around 1.017 or so) with an airstone running. Add the brine. Keep tank where it gets no direct sun, and is cool (~65). Mark the water level on the side of the tank--add freshwater as needed to keep the water level there. Feed every three days with yeast culture (activated yeast in warm water and sugar--only a few drops).

I also checked with the LFS to know when the got their brine shipments, and bought them ASAP--the longer they sit at the store, the less likely they are to live long, IME. If the brine aren't active, if there's a strong odor, don't buy more than one feeding's worth.

Put them in a covered plastic deli container, to give them maximum water surface. Put a few grains of ammo-carb or zeolite to take up ammonia, which is very toxic. And a smidgen of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda, not baking powder) to keep the pH high. And keep them cool. (The household fridge is off-limits here, too! So-- what about a mini-fridge from a yard sale?)

Don't save them too long. Without algae to eat, they're losing their nutritious value.

I think the frozen variety is much easier to deal with.
