cichlids, and many other fishes, can change color depending on their mood, as a response to stress, as well as to adapt to their surroundings (darker to camouflage with dark surroundings, etc).

yeah do yourself a favore and don't get white gravel. I learned on that one. All my fish looked bleached out. It looked like I left them out in the sun to long.

Good advice from firsthand experience.

My Blue Acaras are always changing colors. On one side of my tank it is darker and the Blues tend to get a darker color. The other side has more light to it and they become a lighter color on that side. I also have a darker blue gravel and it seems to effect the colors as well.

Well I goofed then...my 55 malawi tank has white sand (the fine sand from HD) but a black/blue background. Oh well luckily all I have is albino zebras and one OB..something female, so I guess I'm ok then since they are supposed to be washed out (well white atleast)

Cylon... the gravel you have in your tank makes your GT's color pop! Nice job!!

LOL thanks, I have purple gravel in the now with blue coral but I can't take any credit for his color. He had that even when he was a juv.

Shore can!! I have a juvie (3 inch) Black Diamond, growing some in a 10 gal (working on space for another BIG tank, he'll be @10-12) when he is in a dark spot in the tank (lots of fake plants with big leaves, plants across the top for cover, one bulb removed) he's velvet black with irridescent white spots all over!! But the substrate is gravel/sand--so he's usually sand color with strange spots. At least I learned it in the grow-out tank!!!
