hi i have a 60 gal hex.i had an ac500 that from what i was being told was not powerful enough or adaquate to keep my tank and 10 inch male barred midas cichlid healthy. my friend gave me a used fluval 204 canister filter. since i had no instructions to set it up i took a while but i figured it out and got i running and its currently working perfectly. my question is since im kinda strapped for money is there any way i can get better effientcy out of both of the filters, i.e. filter media. also is this enough filtration? because if not my fish is going to have to live with it for awhile until i get some extra money. thanks-young karma

I think those two would be adequate for that size tank.

What kind of media is in the fluval right now?

On another note, how tall is that 60 gal hex?

Those filters should be good unless you start adding more fish (which would be overstocking anyway). For the AC500, just use 2 sponge filters and only use the carbon after medications, etc. Rinse the sponges at least weekly in old tank water. For the FLUVAL 204, this should come with sponge prefilters which can be rinsed maybe monthly to keep up the water flow. You should also get some ceramic rings/balls/etc to use in the compartments. Any type of permanent bio-media will work fine. Don't worry about adding carbon ever to this filter, because you don't want to have to remove it and clean the filter so often. Just mechanical filter pads and bio-filter material is all that's needed. If you can find some type of open-cell sponges (sold for aquarium filters) you can stuff a few chambers with this for even more fine particle removal....this is up to you.

Looking at the footprint of a 60 Hex, regardless of the filtration issue, the one fish is too much for that tank. It hasn't any free swimming space.

right now theres just ceramic rings and sponges in the fluval. im gonna add sum more ceramic rings and sponges in both filters.as for the tank being over stocked, hopefully hell be okay for a month or two. then ill put him in a 150gal.
