well, i finally decided that my betta wont calm down with its current tank mates so i moved him to a 1.5 gal tank. the last straw was when i woke up this morning and i couldnt find one of my guppies. i hope he is hiding in my plants somewhere. poor terrified devil.

Bettas do not get along with anything that looks remotely like a betta (which includes fancy guppies), other anabantids, female bettas unless it's mating time, and fin nippers.

So it seems. Regretfully, one of my guppies has had to suffer for my ignorance.

A lot of people simply will not believe that bettas can be nasty, and there's a bit of a myth around AC that most bettas are cute and cuddly community fish. Here's a recent example of how that isn't the case. Thanks for posting this as a warning to others.

I've read at least 10 x's how bettas & fancy guppies do not get along. Am I the only one who has no problem with mine? Rufus, the betta, has been in with my 4 fancy guppies almost from day one. Occassionally they all chase each other around & through the plants, but it's more playing than anything else. No nipping, biting, or fighting. When they get tired of "playing tag," they all go back to just swimming around.

The only times I have had problems with betta aggression was with fancy guppies and I had one that really hated snails. Other than that, I have never had a problem with a betta in a community tank. So, Ms. Bubbles it is not a MYTH that a betta can be kept in a community tank, they are like any other fish, there are a select few that MUST be kept as a single fish, but the majority of them will do well with the right tank mates.

The myth isn't that they can't be kept in a community, the myth is that all betta's are community fish. There's a difference. I think people need to integrate their betta into the tank with other fish with caution. Assuming they'll all get along and then finding a dead fish is a drag.

Once again I'm saying that people just shouldn't assume it will work out. It might, but it might not.

EDIT: I've heard so many stories about nice bettas that I think I'll try introducing mine to my endlers. Keep your fingers crossed for me please!
