I know this may seem like a silly question, but I was just thinking about this and thought I would ask. I know that normally you would rinse your new gravel before adding it to your tank to prevent any particles from clouding up your water yada yada. But what if you're doing a fishless cycle and won't have any fish in the tank for several weeks. Is is still necessary to rinse the gravel before adding it to the tank since the filter (in my case a Rena xP2) will have at least a month to remove any free floating dust particles from the water?

I was just thinking about how much easier it would be to just pour the gravel straight into the tank from the bag than it would be to try and dump in wet gravel thats sticking to everything it touches.

The only thing that comes to mind, is if some of those substrate dust particles damage an external hang on tank filter's magnetic motor?

Otherwise.... yeah, that would work, but getting wet gravel out of a bag isn't that hard... you just shake the bag a little to get the leftover pieces of gravel out.

LOL I know its not hard, I'm just a lazy bum and dumping dry gravel just seems like so much less of a hassle to me. But I'm thinking its not worth the risk of damaging my brand new filter so maybe I will just rinse it off to be safe. Thanks!
