hey, all. I went to petco today to get cricket food to gut load my FB toad's crix and I saw the most spectacular golden ram for $6.99. so.... see my sig? I was thinking about adding it to my aquarium, but I want to know if it'll work. my betta's quite a placid one, and should allow the ram. i've also heard that they need pairs and that they do best in 20g tanks, but 2 people already said that my tank was fine, and the ram there is all alone in that tank and seems fine. my tank's been up for 3 months now, and my latest test came up A,0/NE,0/NA,5 ppm. it's fairly heavily planted. my main concerns are tank size and if I already have enough critters in there. any thoughs?

you could pull off a single ram..but if it were me..I'd got for a 20 and try to get a pair..1 male two females....
the gold ram is a color morph of the blue..hopefully your streo go tit from a good source.

well, it's the only ram in the store, really.... he's all by himself. I was actually thinking about upgrading to a 30g soon, maybe when I do that I can get some more. now that I see I can get one, all I gotta do is wait 'till friday.

oh, and if you mean in case it may be dyed, I don't think it is. i'vee seen dyed fish before, and it looks quite natural.

No I doubt you could dye a ram that harcore. I have rams with bettas, but in a larger tank. I believe you would be fine in this instance if you were to get the one, especially if the ram is a bit of a youngster. Because the tank is first the home of your betta, your ram shouldnt pick a fight with him. Where as I put a Betta into a (larger) community tank with a pair of adult rams, into their home, and my large male ram was threatened by the large tail so he (and one of my angles who was bored cos she didnt have a partner) proceeded to peck it off to about half length. Once his tail was smaller he was happy. The male ram and the betta spar a bit but dont hurt each other. They almost look like they are having fun mostly. But the betta is a bit skitish when he is pecked on the tail and will run for his life. Plus he only has half a tail now, but he doesn't mind.

I have also introduced a female ram into my g/f's 10G tank which was the home of a pair of crown bettas and some platies. The female ram just did her own thing, maybe chased a platie occasionally, and then she laid eggs by herself, which was amusing.

If you do decide to get the ram I would recomend lots of plants. Plants can solve many problems as it creates more territories and hiding places. But if the ram ends up picking on your betta, which I doubt would happen (without a female around to impress there's not much point to hostilaty with these guys) then you can get your larger tank and get some more rams and always keep your betta in his current home.

I do have a pair of rams and a pair of bettas(plus 3 full grown angels, schools of tetras etc..) in a densly vegitated 30G tank atm though and everything is fine. Plants and rocky caves make it so.

yeah.. my tank's quite well planted.... i've got lots of jave moss everywhere, and the java ferns break things up, too. I also have 2 caves in there, so I guess that's enough space for the two to have their way. and I also checked with petco, they said that they never sell dyed fish, and that it's against their "animals come first" policy.

actually one problem they are having with some blue rams..the breeder stuff them ful of hormones..it enhances the colors from what I hear by stimulating the breeding cycle..apparently it has cause problems in some of the fish..

a single ram can survie ina 10 gallon..but when you get the 30..add more and watch the fun.

dorris, it's called supply and demand..

money is at the root of it ..
but many breeders overseas are trying to meet the demand ..so they add hormones to get the fish to breed sooner..
