Hello,

I was browsing the web for some fish help and found this board, hopefully someone here can help me with my question!

I have a 5 1/2 gallon fish tank in my room. I've had a tank before, so I have a general idea of what i'm doing (though i'm still quite the newbie). Sunday I cleaned the tank out (I had a previous fish (betta) in the tank, but I moved him to a smaller bowl so I could put different fish in the tank.. long story:) ) and installed an undergravel airation thingy :D Then I let the tank run for about 32 hours with no fish. I added some of wardley's bullseye 7.0 ph stuff, then let the tank sit for about 8 more hours.

I then purchased a fish for my tank (algae eater... I can't spell the plecostomus word ), floated him in the tank for 15 mins, then put him in... All was fine for about 3 hours.

Now we come to the problem: my water is cloudy. It looks like someone jammed a cloud in the water... it's all white and I can barely see the filter hanging on the back of the tank! I've never seen this before. I thought it might go away overnight, but it hasn't, and i'm kind of worried as to what caused it. Can anyone suggest anything? The water was crystal clear before I put in my fish.. and I didn't put in the water he came in... so i'm quite confused. Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions, and sorry about the long post!

- Joe :)

Bacterial bloom. It will go away in time.

But a plec is far too large for a 5 1/2 gallon tank.

Faramir may well be right. Or the cloudiness could come from single-celled protozoa called plankton.

Another possibility. Since your natural pH is high, I figure your water is also quite "hard." Wardley's Bullseye may be sodium biphosphate. (What does it say on the packaging?) Phosphate can precipitate with calcium and keep your water cloudy.

Water changes would help. Phosphate pH buffers don't soften the water.

i got the same thing!!!! chinese algae eater, wardlys 7.0ph and cloudy water. it was clear, then i left for 4 hours and bam!! i dont know whats wrong but i think it has to do with the 7.0

since Faramir said it might be a Bacterial bloom i left the light off the whole day and guess what?! its gone!!!!!( but my ph is still 7.8)
