Snail magically appearing in tank!?

I've had a 10g cycling for almost 3 weeks now, started out with 2 white clouds and 2 zebra danios, moved the white clouds out and added 3 more danios. Today hubby says there is a snail in the tank!? Where would it have come from? We did not put it in there :laugh:

Also we were gone for about 5 days but changed the water right before we left and again when we got back, we have lost 2 of the zebra danios. We found 1 dead when we got back. Could the dead fish have contaminated the water? They were fed while we were gone.

Oh, we moved the white clouds to a 30g, they are doing good but have been hanging around the top of the tank, is this normal?

I've never heard of a snail coming from an infection. Do you have any plants? Snail eggs could have come in with them, or even with your fish. Snails aren't in and of themselves a problem.
 
All plastic plants. I know it's not a problem just freaked us out!
 
Snails are sneaky--that is what my snail's name is. Sneaky the mystery snail is always showing up somewhere I don't expect him, and finding him in the 55 gallon is like playing hide and seek.

I suspect that going five days between changes in the middle of the cycle may have done it. You need to buy/use a test kit immedately to determine your Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates. And yes, a dead fish would add additional ammonia to the tank, which makes a stressful process even more so. Your fish may also be overfed, which would add even MORE ammonia to the tank.

I've had snails appear in my filter too from time to time... Usually I squish them all when I clean the filter :eek: For me I gather they come from the plants that I get at the LFS. Tho I haven't acquired any new plants in years thus no more snails :thm:
