It looks like there is something irritating it's sheding it's skin and releasing slime into your water. I'd run some activated carbon if I were you to suck up any toxins that it's releasing into your water. If you have other corals they are pretty sensative but, activated carbon will remove most of the turpines from your h20.
If it's a recent introduction ," I think I remember you posting that it was", it's just adjusting to your tank. What are your water parameters, lighting and age of your tank. Uh oh, I just looked at your top pic please tell me you don't have crushed coral in a reef tank. It's going to cause you long term nitrate problems and some softies and most hard coral along with many other inverts are pretty sensative.

salt 1.025
ph 7.9 (is this to low? if so will kalk raise it)
nh3/nh4 0
no2 0
Live Sand Sbustraite
water temp is 78
light is 2x65w PC (1)10k/(1) anatic 03
25 Gal w/30lbs of live rock been up for 1 1/2 yrs I recently moved 5 mins down the road so i replaced the sand in the bottom but it has been about 1 1/2 months sence that.

The coral wasn't like this yesterday the only thing that has changed is i added a Coralife Super skimmer and last night it pulled a ton of green crap out of my water. The only other corals i have are shrooms and xenas they show no signs of trouble. When i first put the leather in the tank he did slime on his base a bit I chalked this up to being in a new home when it was in the lfs it did not have as much light in the display tank as me at least it don't look as brite as mine.

It's probably just shedding and pouty from the move I'd just run a little activated carbon and keep an eye on it for the next couple of days. IME they pout for a week or two due to adjusting to new lights etc. It should grow like gang busters for you after that.

I am also concerned with what the leather is attached to it is like 2 twigs he is holding together to form a base should i leave it just laying on that rock or put it on the sand bed. Or will it move onto the big rock from this crapy base on his own or do I need to help him? If i do need to help him what do i need to do to help him. I can't see his current base supporting him when he is bigger. I do relize that i need to hold off doing anything till he is happy again

Ron, It won't let go of it's mount but, it will stick to what ever else it's touching. So you might want to remove it from it's base and super glue it or tooth pick it in the desired location. oh and I missed one of your earlier questions you'll want to slowly adjust your ph to around 8.2. Lol, I use my xenia as a ph monitor when it looks unhappy I know it's time to check it out.

what is the best way to raise ph slowly. And by remove it from the curent base will the leather squish in my hand if i do that how tightly is it attached to that base or would it be best to glue the base it is on to where i want it. BTW I really appreciate you taking the time to help me

Well you can try to remove it with a credit card but, ime that probably won't work. I'd use a nice sharp razor blade if the c.c. trick doesn't work ," sounds ghastly I know but, it will heal fast do wait though like you already know." Don't try to pull it off you'll really mess it up bad if you do that. I'd glue the critter directly to the rock you want it to live on. I wouldn't pick one that was too big though in case you ever had to move it around. I'm happy to help you out and welcome to A.C. in case I didn't say to ya b/4.
have a good one if you have any more questions ask.
oh p.s. after you cut it off the rock use activated carbon again or it can really nuke you tank it will not be a happy critter. Also supper glue it under water you just have to hold in place for a minute or so to make sure it sticks you can also stick a tooth pick through the base.

so when it is time do i cut it as close to the current base as possiable basically keeping the cuts at the current contact points or just cut all the way across it like i was sawing a log in 1/2 obviously as close to the base as i can get. also i did a KH (carbonated hardness) test on my water it took 11 drops to turn the sample yellow which gives me a 1 drop = 1/2 dH = kh of 5.5 is this to low

umh, yeah that's low in a reef you want around an 8. Just raise it slow ,you don't have to worry about being too perfect yeat if you just have the leather and no fragile inverts like sps and stars for example. It's good to get the practice though. You may not have to cut it at all if the base is really tiny and you can get a good ,"flesh", exposure to the l.r.
If you do cut it save the left over bits these guys are really hardy I wouldn't be very surprised if you didn't get another leather out of it. Do you mind if I ask what your long term plan for the tank is?
