I am on a budget and thinkng of scrapping my refugium idea. I got a seaclone 100 skimmer but everywhere I go says sell it???? My question is how long could I get a way with using a skilter I have a 55g fish and live rock.

skilter = going from bad to worse.

If the seaclone is new in the box I would get my money back. A Proclear 75 runs 150 new here--i bet you paid close to 100 for the seaclone---if budget is a concern, it's well worth waiting and saving a little more money. If you don't put corals in, you won't need your skimmer right away.

If it's not new and you can't get a refund--try it. Some people say they work. Mine was a constant headache of adjusting the airflow and getting micro bubbles in the tank--AND it barely pulled any skimmate out of the tank. The one I have now you just plug it in, adjust the water level and forget about it---I empty a 1/2 cup of the darkest nastiest stuff you could think of every 3 days or so.

I have the MPS75--ther's a hang on unit too if you don't have a sump

Seaclones really aren't THAT bad, more like okay from a far but far from good. Even thogh seaclones aren't the best, they still work none the less and mine (rated for 200g -according to the LFS I bought it second hand from) has proven to be adequete for my 29 softy reef, however I'm not using the stock air valve, as I got mine used and it didn't have the air valve - if your having problems adjusting the air, then go out and spend the $2 on a different valve, from what I read the stock air valve is has got a few problems becuase marineland went cheap on the design. I'm ending up with a 1/2 cup of skimmate a week with my seaclone, BTW.

If your on a bidget and the seaclone doesn't seem addequete to you, I'd suggest that you build your own skimmer, as I would guess that almost all skimmers cost 2-10x more than it cost to actually make.

I'd use the skilter for a boat anchor but, that's about as far as it would go. Lol, your xenia will make a much better skimmer.

My tank came with a skilter 400 and it worked better than the Seaclone, but that isn't saying much----

The only thing good I've heard about Seaclones is from people with 30 gallons or less---just an observation. I think I'm going to modify mine to mimic the Proclear model I have running---I think it'll work.

well I traded a used emperor filter for the seaclone so im not out any money thats why i want to use it... what kind of air valve should I buy????? and should I use it as a hang on or sump what will work better??? thanks again

I'd put it in the sump. You can direct the return flow towards one of the walls and cut down on the bubbles in the dispaly tank. Give it a try and see how it works for you. originally I thought you purchased one so you could return it and go a different route.
